I know this is going to sound strange but I'd never seen a volcano let alone an active one. In my mind a volcano is a mythological thing that doesn't exist today...kinda like unicorns. But for about $7 you can not only see an active volcano but stand a few feet away from the lava. The day before I left Guatemala I had the experience of hiking up Pacaya an active volcano. If this were done in the USA there is no way that you could get that close to lava but in Guatemala tourist are on their own. While this is one of the most amazing things I've ever seen in my life it was also somewhat scary. One wrong move and you could end up falling in a lava cave. Trust me it was worth the risk.
