Roy Bernard, a.k.a. "River Rat" has floated in every Batteau Festival since it was founded 25 years ago. In 25 years, he only missed one day. This year I get to go out with the group for one day. I'm super excited to do this as it has been a goal of mine since moving to Lynchburg. Batteax are boats used to transport tobacco during the 1800s and they historically made a route that started in Lynchburg and ended in Richmond. It's become a Lynchburg tradition for people to float down the river on Batteau and trace the path these boats once made.
