Some photographs from the Democratic Party's election watching festivities in Salt Lake City. Emotions ran high as it became clear Obama was going to be reelected. It was great to be able to document an important moment in history.
U.S. Rep. Jim Matheson's victory speech after narrowly defeating Tea Party candidate Mia Love.
It was only a few weeks ago I learned that skeleton wasn't only something you saw in a science classroom or during halloween. It's also a winter sport. Of course I had heard of the luge and being from the "Cool Runnings" generation, the bobsled. Skeleton it turns out is essentially the same as the luge except people go down the course going on average 75-80 mph head first and on their stomach. That is @!$@!@ crazy! It's also quite challenging to photograph. Here are few images from the day covering skeleton and bobsled.
So back in September I got to check a dream assignment off of my list. Demolition Derby! I was trying not to get my hopes up about the how awesome it would be to photograph demolition derby at sunset during the Utah State Fair (I love state fairs!). The derby did not disappoint. It had everything: nice light, great culture and danger. I had a blast at my first demolition derby and picked chunks of mud out of my hair for days. I thought of the words of Robert Capa "If your pictures aren't good enough, your not close enough," as I dodged cars flying through concrete barriers.
Being from the east coast I always thought of car shows as a group of retired men sitting in front of cars from the 1920-50s in lawn chairs talking about the glory days.
Then I realized there is a whole different take on the standard car show. (sound of horns) The low rider car show. They are amazing. Really I felt like I was in a rap video with these amazing cars and bikes modified in ways I never really believed people actually did.
Hydraulics? I knew in theory that it existed but seeing it live and in person was a whole different beast. I was amazed by this culture I never knew existed. I had only a few hours but here are a few frames from the day.
I am a documentary, editorial and commercial photographer based in Salt Lake City, Utah. After receiving a BFA in visual journalism from Rochester Institute ofTechnology in Rochester, NY I went on to a seven-year career in newspapers, which included staff positions with The Salt Lake Tribune and TheNews & Advance.
I specialize in documentary photojournalism, seeing stories in my own backyard and capturing intimate portraits of the human experience. I love to find beauty in the average moments of life and believe photography has the ability to show us the similarities we all share as people. My craft has draw me into people's living rooms, pulled me onto mountain tops, and humbled me at gravesides; from the Deep South to the American West.
In 2008, while working for The News & Advance, my images from “The Rites of Life” project won a Best in Show Award from the Virginia Press Association. My photographs and multimedia have been recognized by the National Press Photographers Association's Best Of Photojournalism competition, Virginia Associated Press Photos of the Year, Utah Society of Professional Journalists and many other competitions and organizations.
